What It Typically Covers
A proper inspection looks at the mechanical condition rather than the cosmetics. Engine and transmission behavior, evidence of leaks, brake and tire wear, suspension components, the condition of belts and hoses, and a scan for stored diagnostic codes including ones not currently triggering a dashboard light.
That last one matters more than people realize. A car can have a fault stored in memory that the seller has cleared, and readiness monitors that have not completed will show it.
Evidence of previous accident repair is usually visible to someone who knows where to look, even when the paperwork says nothing.
What It Cannot Tell You
An inspection is a snapshot. It cannot promise that nothing will fail next month, and no honest shop will tell you otherwise.
It also will not usually include dismantling anything. Internal engine or transmission condition can be assessed by behavior and by what the fluids look like, but nobody is opening the case during a pre-purchase check.
Handling A Seller Who Resists
A private seller who will not allow an independent inspection has told you something useful. There are plenty of cars for sale, and the reasonable ones say yes without hesitating.
Dealers vary. Many will allow it if you arrange the appointment and collect the car. Some will offer their own inspection instead, which is not the same thing, because the point of an independent inspection is that it is independent.
What To Do With The Findings
Findings are not automatically reasons to walk away. Most used cars have something. Worn tires or brakes due soon are normal wear and they are negotiating information rather than deal breakers.
The ones worth walking away from tend to be structural damage, evidence of overheating history, or a transmission that behaves badly on the test drive. Those are expensive and they rarely improve.
